Why I Wrote the Book

I wrote the Mylo books for my son.
Mylo was a little green stuffed toy we won at the local fair. One day, while standing in my son’s room, I noticed something special about him. Surrounded by all the other toys, Mylo was different — bright green, quietly unique. And I remember thinking to myself, there’s a story here.
Reading to young children is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. It builds language and literacy skills, nurtures brain development, and creates a powerful bond between parent and child. I wanted to give my son not just a story, but a feeling — a sense of comfort, belonging, and love. Growing up, I was often picked on — for wearing glasses, for my weight — and over time, it chipped away at my confidence. I know what it feels like to be different. I know how much kindness matters. And I knew I wanted my children to grow up understanding empathy, acceptance, and the courage it takes to apologize and forgive.
I wrote the very first Mylo story and tucked it away in a drawer, where it stayed for nearly twenty-five years while I focused on raising two amazing children. But the heart of the story never left me.
Everything I write about — kindness, acceptance, empathy, friendship, and life’s important lessons — is woven into Mylo’s world. Mylo isn’t just a character. He is my friend. Through him, I’ve created a safe and gentle place, one that reminds children (and adults) that being different is something to celebrate. Now that my children are grown, Mylo keeps me busy again — and my heart full. And it all started with a little green toy and a mother who saw a story waiting to be told.

Everyone belongs. Everyone matters. Kindness brings us together.
